Access Redwood City Records

Redwood City places city police records close to the county’s main justice offices, but those files still belong to different custodians. To check criminal history in Redwood City, ask city police for a releasable incident report, use the Sheriff for current jail custody, and use Superior Court for filed charges and case outcomes. The city also runs a broad public-records portal for noncourt municipal files. A Redwood City record check becomes much clearer when the request distinguishes the local police file from the booking record and the court docket.

Redwood City Criminal History Checks

Redwood City Police Department Records Unit is the first stop for a report made by city officers. The Sheriff’s inmate locator covers current county custody. MIDX identifies public Superior Court cases after filing, while Records Management at the Hall of Justice provides public file viewing and copies. The California Department of Justice uses fingerprints when a person requests their own statewide summary record.

Do not treat these channels as duplicates. Each is created at a separate stage and may update at a separate pace. Use this order:

  1. Ask Redwood City Police Records Unit for the specific local report or service.
  2. Use Redwood City NextRequest for a broader city Public Records Act request when appropriate.
  3. Check the Sheriff’s inmate locator for current county booking and custody.
  4. Search MIDX, then seek the public court file when index data is too thin.
  5. Use DOJ fingerprint Record Review for your own California criminal history.

Redwood City Records Unit Fees

The Redwood City Records Unit publishes an unusually clear local fee rule. A releasable police report costs $30 for the first eight pages, then $1 for each additional page. Payment is cash or check only. That means a requester should not arrive expecting a card payment. Fees and eligibility are separate questions, so payment does not guarantee that restricted content will be released.

The unit is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., excluding city holidays. Records staff assist with crime and accident reports, ticket sign-offs, local clearance letters, fingerprinting, vehicle releases, and related services. Call 650-780-7100 for the records desk.

Records at Redwood City Police

The Redwood City Police Records Unit states that many releasable reports, including theft, property loss or damage, incidents, and traffic accidents, are available only to a named involved party. Being only a witness is not enough under the unit’s published rule. Bring valid identification and enough event detail to locate the report.

The department email is RCPD@redwoodcity.org, but the city warns that it is not monitored around the clock. It should not replace emergency services or a time-sensitive records call. The records desk can explain whether a walk-in request, form, or other route fits the record.

Named Parties and Redwood City Reports

The named-involved-party requirement is easy to miss. A witness who saw an event may know the report exists yet still lack eligibility for the copy described by the Records Unit. A named driver, victim, property owner, or other involved person may be treated differently based on the report type and governing law.

Ask staff what role the report lists and whether a redacted version can be released. Do not send money before confirming eligibility and the current page count. Records can contain protected personal information, juvenile data, or active investigative material even when the requester is involved.

Redwood City NextRequest Portal

Redwood City uses NextRequest to receive, track, and provide access to city public-records requests. It is useful for municipal records that do not belong to the court and for a written request that benefits from online status tracking. The City Clerk offers portal help at CLERK2@redwoodcity.org or 650-780-7220.

The city provides records electronically where possible. Duplication charges may apply to photocopies, CDs, or DVDs. NextRequest does not move court files into city custody, and it does not replace the police unit’s release rules for law-enforcement reports.

The source portal is shown in the assigned image below.

Redwood City Clearance Letters

A local clearance letter is available only to Redwood City residents. It checks the Redwood City local records system, not every San Mateo County agency and not the California DOJ repository. The fee is $30 by cash or check. Walk-ins are welcome during lobby hours with valid photo identification.

This narrow scope is vital. A clear local result does not state that no record exists elsewhere. Someone reviewing their own complete California summary should follow DOJ’s fingerprint Record Review process. Someone seeking a known court outcome should check Superior Court.

Booking and Arrest Records in Redwood City

A Redwood City arrest can move quickly from city police to county custody. Maguire Correctional Facility, at 300 Bradford Street, is the county intake facility. Maple Street Correctional Center is also in Redwood City. The Sheriff’s official inmate locator is the first source for current custody, and the jail phone is 650-599-3000.

A booking file records intake and custody. It is distinct from the Redwood City police report and from a later court case. Prosecutors may alter or decline the initial charge. A booking is not proof of guilt, and a release from custody does not by itself state the outcome of a filed case.

Bradford Street Booking Path

Redwood City has a rare geographic concentration of justice offices. City police may make the arrest, Maguire handles county intake on Bradford Street, the Sheriff’s headquarters is nearby at 330 Bradford Street, and the Hall of Justice stands at 400 County Center. Adult Probation also has offices at County Center.

Close distance does not merge the records. Ask Redwood City Police for its report, the Sheriff for booking or custody information, and Superior Court for the docket. This custodian test matters more than the buildings’ proximity.

The Redwood City Municipal Court File

Redwood City criminal cases are filed in the Superior Court of California, County of San Mateo, not a separate municipal criminal court. The Southern Branch criminal division occupies the Hall of Justice and Records at 400 County Center. Public criminal file viewing takes place through Records Management on the first floor in Room A.

Public file viewingHall of Justice, 1st Floor, Room A
Viewing hoursMonday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

MIDX supplies case number, party type, case name, file date, and the source of index information. It does not provide all documents. Cases filed before 1993 require a call to 650-261-5100, option 1.

RCPD or Hall of Justice

Choose RCPD when the desired record is the police narrative, incident report, accident report, vehicle release, ticket sign-off, or local clearance service. Choose Hall of Justice when the question is what prosecutors filed, what happened in court, or what sentence and disposition the judge entered.

For public case documents, Records Management permits viewing during its shorter morning and early afternoon window. It limits users to five files at once. Off-site files require an in-person request and a prepaid $10 retrieval fee; the court says those files can take up to 72 hours and are held five working days.

How Redwood City Records Reach County Offices

Redwood City Police Department creates the incident and arrest report. Maguire or Maple Street creates the booking record when county custody occurs. The District Attorney makes a filing decision, and Superior Court creates the case file. Courts and law enforcement then report qualifying data to the California Department of Justice.

The city report may exist before any MIDX entry. A court disposition may appear long after release from jail. DOJ’s fingerprint-based subject review can reveal statewide reporting that no single Redwood City name search can supply.

Redwood City County-Seat Advantage

Redwood City is the county seat and third-largest city by the 2025 Census estimate in the research. Its local advantage is physical access to several official custodians. A requester can reach city police services, Sheriff offices, jail facilities, Superior Court Records Management, and Adult Probation within the city.

That access is helpful when online data fails. It also makes routing discipline more important. A general city PRA request should not be used for a court file, and a court clerk does not release the city police report. Know the record, office, hours, fee, and identification rule before traveling.

Redwood City Record Access Rules

The California Public Records Act applies to city agency requests through Redwood City and NextRequest. Exemptions can protect active investigations, juvenile material, victim information, confidential sources, and other sensitive facts. Court records follow judicial access and sealing rules instead. California DOJ summary criminal history has its own strict dissemination law.

Key Statutes:

California Public Records Act creates the city records request process and preserves lawful exemptions.

Penal Code section 11105 restricts dissemination of California summary criminal history.

California Rule of Court 2.550 governs access when a court record is sealed.

Use the narrowest official channel. Confirm the current fee and eligibility before paying, and verify any result against the original Redwood City or county office.

Redwood City Counter Planning

Redwood City’s several nearby counters make advance preparation worthwhile. A police-report requester should confirm named-party eligibility, bring valid photo identification, and be ready for cash or check. A court-file visitor should identify the case in MIDX first and note the case number. Records Management’s public viewing hours end at 1:00 p.m., earlier than the city police Records Unit closes. Treating those schedules as interchangeable can waste a trip.

The court limits viewing to five files at a time, then allows five more after the first set is returned. It makes only one copy of the same file on the same day unless extra copies have been prepaid. If a file is stored off site, the $10 retrieval request must be made in person and prepaid. The documented retrieval period is within 72 hours, and the file is held for five working days. These are court procedures, not Redwood City police fees.

NextRequest has a different role. Use it to describe the city record, submit the request, and track the city’s response. If portal navigation is the problem, the City Clerk contact can assist. A request for a complaint, minute order, or criminal judgment still belongs with Superior Court. A request for current jail housing belongs with the Sheriff. Keeping those lines clear helps city staff avoid rerouting a submission.

For police reports, the published $30 price covers the first eight pages. Ask for an estimate when a report may run longer because each additional page costs $1. The local clearance letter has the same base price but answers a narrower question and is restricted to Redwood City residents. It searches only the city’s local records. Neither purchase substitutes for a fingerprint-based California DOJ record review or a search of county court outcomes.

The Redwood City police email address is not monitored at all hours, so it should not carry an urgent custody question. Use the Sheriff’s locator or jail phone for current housing. For a planned records visit, call the Records Unit at 650-780-7100 and ask whether the report can be released to your listed role. Bring valid photo identification and the accepted payment type. If the report is not a police record at all, use NextRequest for city material or the Hall of Justice for a filed criminal case.
